Every day we spend most of our time in front of electronic devices. During this time, when we watch television, work on the computer, play on our tablet or check our smartphone, we are exposed to the phenomenon of “blue light”. But what exactly is this?

What is blue light?

Light is an electromagnetic radiation, of which the human eye perceives only a portion (from 380 nm to 780 nm, the so-called “visible light“): of this portion, the band with the shortest wavelength (from 380 nm to 500 nm) is called “blue light“.

Blue light is a particular light emitted by LED devices and low energy consumption technological devices (such as computers, tablets, smartphones, or TVs).

It has a higher frequency and energy, which can lead to harmful consequences for our eyesight.

Unlike UV rays, blue light is visible to the human eye. Apparently, however, blue light has no negative effects, in fact it is used above all to treat sleep disorders and depression through the technique of phototherapy. It all depends on the amount of time you are exposed to this type of light.

Let’s see, as done for presbyopia and its symptoms, what are the effects and possible solutions to protect our eyes from blue light.

How does blue-light affect us?

We can identify short and long term effects.

Continued exposure to blue light for too long can cause less serious effects such as:

  •  redness;
  •  fatigue and stress
  •  irritation
  •  dry eye

Some more serious effects include:

  •  painful inflammation of the cornea
  •  cataract
  •  damage to the retina (macular degeneration)

Maculopathy is the degeneration of retinal tissue and can be facilitated by overexposure to blue light. Cataract is the clouding of the optical lens, caused by ultraviolet and high-energy blue light.

But there are also effects on the body because blue light inhibits the secretion of melatonin causing insomnia. Headache is related to increased eye strain as well as loss of concentration. For example, it is very important to know that you should not look at the phone in the dark: this concentration of light can cause insomnia since the artificial lights of the devices alter the natural rhythms of the human body.

How to protect yourself from blue light?

It is good to use simple precautions and protections such as:

  • apply filters to your devices: i.e. films placed on the screen to counteract the power and harmful effects of blue light;
  • blinking frequently: this promotes hydration contributing to good vision avoiding fogging and irritation;
  • tilt the device: this will reduce direct exposure to blue light;
  • keep an adequate distance from the monitors avoiding light reflections on the screens (both natural and artificial);
  • avoid spending time in front of electronic devices before sleeping, blue light can interrupt the natural production of melatonin, the hormone that creates sleep;
  • use anti-blue light lenses: the use of glasses with blocking action lenses protects the eyes especially when we are busy with electronic devices.

The efficacy of the anti blue light glasses

Whether for work, or simply for leisure, more and more are on the screen of their smartphone, tablet or computer.

The use of glasses with a blue light blocking action is of primary importance if you want to save your eyesight. For those who see well, a neutral lens equipped with this filter may be useful, for those who have problems related to sight there are dedicated solutions.

Blue light glasses

CliC Eyewear, the brand that revolutionized the presbyopia market and known for its attention to technological innovation, as well as for the practicality of its solutions, presented the new “Wallstreet Classic” model.

This model offers a valid and practical solution to the problem of blue light thanks to the “Blue Block” lenses, safeguarding our sight even during prolonged use of technological devices.

The “Wallstreet Classic” is available for diopters from +0 to +3.0, comes in four colors (black, blue, gray, red) and is equipped with an XL temple to adapt to any shape of face and head to fit perfectly.

As we have seen, the problem of blue light is absolutely not to be underestimated as we spend many hours in front of electronic devices every day. It is our duty to safeguard our health by paying attention to the simple precautions. Blue Block” technology, will help us see the contents transmitted on our devices in a much clearer way, avoiding eye fatigue.

With glasses and anti-blue light lenses, we respect the focus mode of our eye due to the different conditions of the source of lights and colors: in doing so we will take care of our sight and our health.
